Password Access Ending in Microsoft Authenticator this August

Microsoft revealed that beginning August 1, 2025, it will gradually remove the password-saving feature from its Authenticator app. The change is part of the company’s plan to streamline how autofill works within the app.

According to an official support notice, the autofill feature within Microsoft Authenticator will stop functioning in July 2025. One month later, access to stored passwords in the app will be completely removed.

Although users could previously save or import passwords, Microsoft quietly disabled that option in June. However, users will still be able to use the autofill function throughout July.

Importantly, the feature isn’t being discarded entirely— just a change in where things are stored. Any saved passwords or address info will now be linked to your Microsoft account. You’ll still be able to access them, but only through the Edge browser, as long as it’s set as your default option for autofill.

Microsoft also noted that once the change takes full effect, any passwords stored in the Authenticator app will no longer be viewable. Passwords that were generated but not saved will be lost permanently.

These updates won’t affect passkeys. People who use passkeys with their Microsoft accounts will still need to keep Authenticator enabled for them to function. Disabling the app will also deactivate passkey access.

For those who already rely on tools like Google Password Manager or Apple’s iCloud Keychain, switching from default autofill providers is a straightforward option. Users can also export their existing Authenticator-stored passwords and migrate them to whichever platform they prefer.
